15 Beautiful Laser Cutting Ideas (and Which Ones Sell)

A layered lamp, a finger-joint box, a city map, earrings and a Georgian alphabet puzzle: 15 laser cutting projects with materials, difficulty and tips on selling.

The best laser cutting ideas are things that cut quickly from a flat sheet and feel personal: a finger-joint wooden box, a layered lamp, a city map, earrings, Christmas ornaments and name signs. Below are 15 such ideas with material, difficulty and rough machine time for each, followed by advice on which laser-cut products sell well.

Every idea assumes a 100 W CO₂ laser, although most also work on a weaker machine, just more slowly. Most use 3–6 mm plywood, because wood is the easiest place to start: it is cheap, cuts cleanly and engraves beautifully.

Times are laser minutes only, without design, assembly or finishing. The real figure depends on the machine, the size and the settings.

How to choose your first project

For a first project, pick something with one material, one thickness and at most two operations (cut and engrave). That way your attention goes to the settings rather than to ten different problems. Four simple rules:

  • Test first: on a new material, cut a small power and speed grid before the real file.
  • Keep it small: make the first version under 10 cm. Mistakes are cheap and quick to fix.
  • Go easy on fine detail: in 3 mm plywood, very thin bridges and fine lines burn and break easily, so draw narrow areas a little wider.
  • Safety: stay with the machine while it cuts, keep the exhaust and Air Assist on, and cut only materials you can identify. PVC, vinyl and polystyrene foam are off-limits for a laser.

Laser cutting ideas in wood: home and gifts

1. Finger-joint wooden box

The classic most people start with. The walls interlock with “fingers”, and a well-fitted box stands even without glue. The secret is kerf compensation. See the step-by-step guide and box generators in a laser-cut wooden box with finger joints.

2. Layered lamp (shadow box)

Several layers of plywood, each with a cut-out silhouette: mountains, forest, a city skyline. An LED strip sits behind them and the light creates depth between the layers. It is one of the most striking gifts, but the design takes time: plan the layers so every piece stays connected to the frame and nothing falls out.

3. City map

The streets, river and parks of Tbilisi, Batumi or a home village, engraved or cut in plywood. Street data often comes from OpenStreetMap, which is open under the ODbL licence and requires credit to OpenStreetMap. A map in layers (the river on one, streets on another) looks especially good.

4. Wedding signs and names

Welcome signs, table numbers, name place cards, cake toppers. Clear or coloured acrylic gives a modern look, plywood a rustic one. Simple but in demand: everything lives in one file and only the names change.

5. Georgian alphabet puzzle

The 33 letters of Mkhedruli on a plywood board, each one lifting out. It is a learning toy for children and a souvenir for visitors: the living culture of the three writing systems of the Georgian alphabet was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016. For children, sand the edges smooth.

Jewellery and festive projects

6. Earrings and pendants

Light, quick and cheap to make. 3 mm plywood or coloured acrylic, in almost any shape: a leaf, geometry, a Georgian ornament. Wooden earrings need a thin coat of oil or varnish to protect them from moisture.

7. Christmas ornaments

Snowflakes, stars, baubles with names, a chichilaki silhouette. In Georgia the festive season runs from 1 January through Christmas (7 January) to the Old New Year, so demand for these starts in early December. Prepare the file early, and place the ribbon hole a few millimetres from the edge so the wood does not break.

8. Key fobs

The quickest first project: cut and engrave in one job. With a name, a logo or a city symbol. For leather fobs use only vegetable-tanned leather.

9. Door and house signs

A family name, a house number, an office door sign. Two layers (a background with letters glued on top) create shadow and depth. For outdoor use, always seal the wood with exterior varnish.

Personalised and practical items

10. Photo on wood

A family photo or a pet portrait on light-coloured wood. The key is preparing the image and choosing the right dithering mode; it is all explained in laser engraving on wood.

11. Engraved cutting board

A name, a recipe or an ornament on a ready-made solid wood board. Here the laser only engraves, it does not cut. Keep the engraved side decorative and use the other side for cutting.

12. Coasters

Four or six coasters in a set, with engraving. Cork and leather stop the glass from sliding; plywood needs oil or wax.

13. Desk organiser and phone stand

A pen pot, a desk organiser, a stand for a phone or tablet. Accurate slots and joints matter here, so measure the sheet thickness first.

14. 3D puzzle and models

A dinosaur, a ship, a building model assembled from flat parts with slots. Architects use the same technique for their models.

15. Leather card holder

A laser cuts leather precisely, makes the holes for hand stitching and engraves initials. Chrome-tanned leather and faux leather (often made from PVC) are not laser cut; which materials a laser can cut explains why.

Which laser-cut products sell well?

What sells best is what you cannot find in a shop: something with a name, a date or the customer’s own photo. People pay for personalisation, not for plywood. Signs of a product that sells:

  • Personalisation: names, dates, photos, a family name.
  • Occasions and seasons: New Year, weddings, birthdays, graduations.
  • Small and light: easy to ship and looks good in photos.
  • Fast to produce: the file is made once and only the text changes.
  • Local motifs: Georgian letters, ornaments and city maps for visitors.
  • Corporate orders: a company logo on boxes, coasters and key fobs, but only with the client’s permission.
Tip from the lab

Before you put a product on sale, make three samples and photograph them in daylight. If one piece needs more than 20 minutes of hand work, simplify the design first and set the price after that.

How to price and where to sell

A price has five parts: material (including waste), machine time, design time, finishing and packaging, and profit. The most common beginner mistake is counting only the material: a piece of plywood is cheap, but sanding, assembly and packaging often take longer than the laser. The logic of a small fabrication business, with a cost table and a pricing formula, is laid out in starting a 3D printing business, and almost the same rules apply to a laser.

Where to sell:

  1. Instagram and Facebook: good photos, a short video of the cutting and an easy way to order.
  2. Local markets and festivals: buyers can hold the product and leave a personalised order.
  3. Souvenir and gift shops: small batches with Georgian motifs.
  4. Companies and events: corporate gifts, event decor, name badges.

One important rule: do not use other people’s designs, famous characters or brand logos without permission. Your own designs, or files licensed for commercial use, are the safe route.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest first laser project?

A key fob or a Christmas ornament: one outline, one engraving, a few minutes. The next step is a finger-joint box, which teaches you kerf compensation.

Which wood is best for laser cutting?

To start, 3–4 mm birch plywood: stable, affordable, and engraving shows well on its pale surface. For engraving, basswood, maple, alder and cherry work well; pine is resinous and burns unevenly.

What can I make with a laser cutter as a gift?

Something personalised: a box with a name, a photo on wood, a layered lamp or a family sign. These are made one at a time, and that is exactly why people value them.

Can I use files downloaded from the internet?

Yes, there are many free files, but read the licence carefully. A file for personal use cannot be sold; for commercial work you need your own design or the right licence.

Which sells better: wood or acrylic?

Wood looks warm and handmade and is chosen more often for gifts and souvenirs. Acrylic is modern and colourful, good for signs, weddings and jewellery. The best products often combine both.

Next step

The simplest way to find out whether laser cutting is for you is to finish one product. At the Make a Wooden Box with a Laser masterclass in Tbilisi you draw a finger-joint box in CorelDRAW, cut it from plywood and assemble it, and the box is yours to keep.
